Gasoline Car Decline Overstated as Fuel Use Hits Records

Predictions about the end of gasoline cars now appear to be overstated.

Global gasoline consumption reached a record high in 2025, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The agency also expects fuel use to rise again and set a new record in 2026.

This increase is happening even before new pro-gasoline regulatory changes announced in the United States and Europe come into effect. These policy shifts are expected to ease pressure on traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

The latest data suggests that gasoline-powered cars are likely to remain on roads longer than previously expected, despite the global push toward electric vehicles.

The latest IEA data adds to growing evidence that the global shift away from gasoline is moving slower than earlier forecasts suggested.
