The Government of India has clarified that no order has been issued to unblock Chinese social media platform TikTok, which was banned in June 2020 following clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan valley of eastern Ladakh.

Speculation arose when some users reported being able to access the TikTok website on their desktop browsers, leading to rumors that the app had been restored. However, official sources dismissed these claims as “false and misleading,” confirming that the ban remains in place.

TikTok was among the 59 Chinese apps—including UC Browser, Shein, and others—that were initially blocked in June 2020 on grounds of national security and data privacy concerns. In subsequent months, the Indian government expanded the list to include several other applications, including the popular gaming platform PUBG.

Authorities have reiterated their stance on safeguarding digital sovereignty and ensuring that banned apps do not operate in India, despite occasional technical loopholes allowing limited access.
