A man has been detained in Helsinki on suspicion of involvement in the death of a woman who fell from a fifth-floor balcony in the city’s Hietalahti neighbourhood last Wednesday.

Police said the suspect, in his late 50s, may have played a role in the roughly 50-year-old woman’s fatal fall through an apartment balcony barrier. The detention order was processed on Saturday at the Helsinki Police Department headquarters in Pasila.

According to Finnish broadcaster Yle, the suspect lived with the woman who died.

The outlet also reported that the man has a lengthy criminal history, including a firearms conviction, and

was previously subject to a restraining order in a domestic violence case involving a former spouse some 20 years ago.

Authorities noted, however, that there were no outstanding legal disputes between the suspect and the woman prior to the fatal incident. The investigation is ongoing.
