A Five-Year Vow of Standing No Sitting, No Rest
An unidentified man in Indian Man has been standing continuously in one spot for five years as a religious vow dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism.
He neither sits nor stretches his legs at any point during the day or night, maintaining his upright position without interruption.
Sleeps Upright in a Special Harness
To sustain his vow through sleep, the man uses a specially designed support harness that holds his body upright while he rests.
This allows him to technically sleep without breaking his commitment to remaining on his feet, a practice that has continued uninterrupted for five years.
Legs Darkened and Swollen Due to Circulation Failure
The prolonged standing has taken a severe physical toll. His legs have become heavily swollen and visibly darkened as a direct result of chronic poor blood circulation over the five-year period.
Temple volunteers attend to his condition regularly, applying medicinal ointments to his legs to manage the deterioration and prevent further damage.
The Spiritual Belief Behind the Vow
The man believes that upon successfully completing the full vow period, he will receive a powerful inner spiritual energy that will, in his belief, compel Lord Shiva to physically manifest before him.
This form of extreme bodily devotion falls within a broader tradition of tapasya severe austerities practiced in Hindu religious observance to invoke divine favor or presence.
Context: Extreme Asceticism in Hindu Devotional Practice
Practices of extreme physical sacrifice as acts of devotion to deities are documented across Indian Man religious history, particularly in traditions connected to Shaivism the branch of Hinduism centered on the worship of Lord Shiva.
Such vows, while uncommon, are not without precedent in Indian Man, where public acts of prolonged austerity are occasionally undertaken at temples and religious sites.
No Medical or Government Intervention Reported
No statement from Indian Man health authorities, local government bodies, or any medical institution regarding the man’s condition has been publicly issued.
It remains unclear whether any formal medical assessment of his physical state has been conducted or whether authorities have engaged with the situation.
