Iranian authorities have confirmed that around 5,000 people died during recent protests across the country, according to a report by Reuters. Officials also acknowledged that approximately 500 members of the security forces were among those killed.
The most intense and violent clashes reportedly took place in Kurdish regions in north-western Iran, where the highest number of casualties was recorded.
Separately, Iranian officials confirmed the death of 26-year-old protester Erfan Soltani. Soltani was reported to be the first protester sentenced to death in connection with the demonstrations. His execution had been scheduled for January 14, but was later postponed.
Iranian opposition media have since claimed that Soltani died while in custody, alleging he was subjected to severe mistreatment. These allegations have not been independently verified, and Iranian authorities have not publicly commented on the claims.
The situation continues to draw international attention, with calls from human rights groups for transparency and independent investigations.
