Mass demonstrations erupted in Istanbul after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan moved to impose control over Turkey’s largest opposition party.

Crowds gathered across the city following Erdoğan’s decision to suspend the leadership of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Istanbul, transferring authority to an interim council.

The step came shortly after the arrest of former Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated. İmamoğlu, once viewed as Erdoğan’s strongest rival, had already sparked protests in the past over what critics called a fabricated bribery case.
