Guernica, Spain Spanish actress Itziar Ituño addressed a large pro-Palestine rally in Guernica on drawing comparisons between the 1937 bombing of the Basque town and Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
Actress Known for “Money Heist” Role Addresses Crowd
Itziar Ituño, widely recognized for playing Inspector Raquel Murillo in the Netflix series “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”), spoke to a crowd of thousands at the rally.
According to Hammad Kahlun, International Correspondent for the Scandinavian News Agency, Ituño stated that Palestinian land “is our land too” and said Israeli forces were committing war crimes in Gaza, adding, “We will not stand by as spectators to this genocide.”
She also urged the crowd to reject dehumanization, saying all people “deserve a place in this world.”
Symbolism of Guernica as Rally Location
The choice of Guernica carried historical weight. The town was destroyed by Nazi German aerial bombing during the Spanish Civil War in 1937, an event immortalized in Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica.
By referencing this history, Itziar Ituño connected the suffering of the Basque people to what she described as the current situation facing Palestinians in Gaza.
Call for Ceasefire
Ituño called the ongoing destruction “unacceptable” for the world to witness, and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza along with an end to Israeli occupation, according to the report.
