A major diplomatic dispute has arisen between Japan and China following remarks by a former Japanese ambassador suggesting that Chinese tourists are rude and litter.

On November 14, China issued a travel warning for Japan after Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, stated that the Japanese military could intervene if China attempted to invade Taiwan.

In response, Chinese tourists immediately cancelled 500,000 flights to Japan.

Former Japanese Ambassador to Australia, Shingo Yamagami, commented that fewer Chinese tourists could make Japan a “better place,”

adding that Japan welcomes tourists who demonstrate good manners and genuine interest. He highlighted that Japan’s renowned cleanliness and serene environment benefit from this recent development.
