A farmer in Rovaniemi, Lapland, was left speechless when a cow that had disappeared six months ago suddenly returned and brought along a newborn calf.
Dairy farmer Pertti Salmi couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw Vilukas, the missing heifer, standing outside his barn last Monday morning. The cow had escaped from Pirttilahti Farm around May Day, jumping over a fence and running off into the forests of Sinettä village.
Salmi believes the young cow fled because she was bullied by other cattle. Locals had tried to capture her several times in May, but she always managed to vanish into the woods. As summer passed, Salmi assumed she had fallen prey to predators or drowned in a nearby river.
To his astonishment, Vilukas returned healthy with a one-day-old calf by her side. “I was speechless,” Salmi said, adding that both animals appeared to be in good condition, having survived entirely on forest vegetation.
“She just looked at me,” he added with a smile, “as if to say are you going to feed me now?”
