French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned that any move by the European Union to utilize frozen Russian funds for Ukraine must remain within the framework of international law.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Macron said he agrees with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who has raised concerns about the European Commission’s proposal to repurpose Russian assets.
Macron remarked that, “The handling of frozen assets should comply with international law, as the Belgian Prime Minister also emphasized.”
The EU continues to deliberate on how to handle billions of euros in Russian state and oligarch assets frozen since the invasion of Ukraine. Advocates argue the funds could help Ukraine’s military and rebuilding efforts, but critics warn that bypassing legal safeguards may set a risky precedent for global financial stability.
