According to German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, former U.S. President Donald Trump has unsuccessfully attempted four times in recent weeks to contact Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by phone.

The report claims Modi has been “offended” after Trump described India’s economy as “dead” and announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports due to New Delhi’s ongoing purchase of Russian oil. With the new measures taking effect on August 27, total U.S. tariffs on Indian goods will rise to 50%.

New Delhi has condemned Washington’s move as “unfair and unjustified” and vowed to continue buying Russian oil. The newspaper also reported that a planned U.S. delegation visit to India for trade talks has now been canceled.
