NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has made a striking statement that has drawn global attention, openly endorsing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on the strategic importance of the Arctic and Greenland.
Speaking on rising geopolitical tensions in the region, Rutte emphasized that Western allies must significantly strengthen their presence and defensive posture in the Arctic.
He warned that growing activity by China and Russia poses long-term security risks that cannot be ignored.
“President Trump is right,” Rutte stated, stressing that NATO members must take greater responsibility for safeguarding the Arctic region.
According to him, the area is rapidly becoming a focal point of global competition due to its strategic location, emerging shipping routes, and vast natural resources.
Rutte highlighted Greenland’s importance in maintaining regional stability, noting that failure to act decisively could allow rival powers to expand their influence. He called for enhanced cooperation among NATO allies to ensure effective monitoring, defense, and deterrence in the High North.
The remarks represent one of the strongest acknowledgments yet from a NATO leader aligning with Trump’s long-standing warnings about Arctic security.
Analysts say the statement signals a potential shift toward a more assertive NATO strategy in the region as tensions with Moscow and Beijing continue to rise.
