Activist Found Dead After Probing Noboa Family Allegations
Monika Silva Koniuszek, a Polish anti-corruption activist based in Ecuador, has been murdered following her investigation into allegations connected to the family business of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, according to her friends and fellow activists who spoke to The Guardian.
The case has drawn international attention given its direct links to the highest levels of Ecuadorian political power.
Cocaine Allegations Against Noboa Trading
At the centre of Silva Koniuszek’s investigation were claims that cocaine had been seized in banana shipments exported by Noboa Trading a company linked to the family of President Daniel Noboa.
The activist had been compiling evidence related to these allegations prior to her death, according to sources close to her.
Ecuador Government Initially Called It Suicide
Ecuador’s government initially characterised Silva Koniuszek’s death as an apparent suicide.
However, a subsequent postmortem examination contradicted that assessment, finding she had died as a result of a blow to the head and strangulation — findings that have fundamentally altered the nature of the investigation.
Dossier Delivered to US Embassy in Quito
Silva Koniuszek had reportedly told close friends that she had recently delivered a dossier of allegations directly to the US Embassy in Quito before her death.
The contents of that dossier and any response from US diplomatic officials have not been publicly disclosed.
Death Threats and Broader Investigations
Beyond the Noboa Trading cocaine allegations, Silva Koniuszek had also been actively investigating alleged land trafficking involving politically connected figures in Santa Elena province, as well as a range of environmental crimes in the region.
She had received repeated death threats in the period leading up to her murder, which she had disclosed to friends and fellow activists.
Ecuadorian Authorities Now Investigating
Ecuadorian authorities have confirmed they are conducting a formal investigation into her death following the postmortem findings.
No arrests or official suspects have been publicly named at the time of publication. The case is being closely monitored by international human rights and press freedom organisations.
Context: Ecuador’s Security and Political Climate
Ecuador under President Daniel Noboa has been grappling with a severe internal security crisis driven by organised crime and drug trafficking networks with deep roots in the country’s export economy.
The banana export industry, historically controlled by a small number of powerful families including the Noboa family, has previously been flagged by international drug enforcement agencies as a known vector for cocaine smuggling into Europe.
