Snow has fallen in Saudi Arabia’s northern regions for the first time in nearly 30 years, marking a rare and historic weather event in the desert kingdom.
The snowfall covered vast desert areas stretching across thousands of square kilometers, from the Tuwaiq mountain range in the west to regions closer to Riyadh. Local television channels have described the phenomenon as historic.
Residents across the affected areas are widely sharing videos and photographs on social media, celebrating the unusual sight of snow blanketing the desert. However, many have also complained about extreme cold temperatures and icy road conditions.
Saudi Arabia’s National Meteorology Center had issued advance warnings about a sharp drop in temperatures and urged citizens to follow safety precautions, particularly while traveling.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather conditions remain unstable in several regions.
Unusual weather events in the Middle East have been increasingly reported in recent years, as covered earlier by SNN News Finland.
