Tourists were delighted on Friday when a small group of reindeer wandered into the city’s busiest downtown area. Four reindeer were seen strolling along Pekankatu and in front of the Arctic Light Hotel, attracting crowds eager to take photos.

Locals were surprised to see the animals in the city center, as reindeer usually stay on the opposite side of the river near Koskipuisto and the beach.

Hanna Nurmi, executive director of the Reindeer Herders’ Association, said the reindeer likely crossed a bridge to reach downtown “just like people do.”

The unexpected visit provided a unique experience for both residents and visitors, highlighting Finland’s close connection between wildlife and urban life.
