Russia warns it will match US with swift nuclear test

A senior Russian diplomat warned on Wednesday that Russia would immediately conduct a nuclear test if the United States resumed such tests, state news agency RIA reported.

The statement comes amid speculation that Washington has been preparing its testing infrastructure.

President Vladimir Putin had earlier signaled in October that Moscow would respond in kind if any nuclear power carried out a test, noting that Russia had observed indications of preparations by an unnamed country.

The warning adds fresh tension to already fragile arms control frameworks between Washington and Moscow, raising fears of a renewed nuclear arms race.
