For the first time since the war began, Ukraine’s main government building in Kyiv was hit during a large-scale Russian attack, officials confirmed on Sunday.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the roof and upper floors of the Cabinet of Ministers building were damaged in the latest strike, which also triggered a fire.
Officials reported that at least four people lost their lives across the country, including a young woman and an infant, after a residential block in Kyiv’s Svyatoshynsky district was hit.Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a record number of drones and missiles over 800 in total targeting several cities and regions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes, calling them a “deliberate crime” and warning that Russia was intensifying the war instead of pursuing peace.Authorities reported widespread destruction in several regions, including Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Sumy, and Chernihiv.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed its strikes targeted Ukraine’s military and transport infrastructure, while Kyiv officials suggested that one drone may have crashed into the government building after being intercepted.
The attack has been seen as highly symbolic, as the center of Kyiv home to parliament, the presidential palace, and government offices had remained secure since the invasion began.
The escalation of violence in Ukraine is evident, from the Russian strike on Kyiv’s government building to the assassination of former Speaker Andriy Parubiy in Lviv, both highlighting the country’s deepening crisis.
