Taliban Morality Police Arrest UN-Linked Staff

The Taliban’s morality police in Afghanistan have Detain approximately 20 employees working for United Nations-affiliated organizations, citing what authorities described as “improper” facial hair.

The arrests were reported by journalist Riffat Kausar via SNN News Finland.

Taliban Beard Law: Longer Than a Fist

Taliban regulations mandate that all men maintain facial hair reaching a length no less than the span of a clenched fist, a rule enforced across the general population and workforce alike.

Failure to comply with this requirement is treated as a punishable moral violation enforceable by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, commonly referred to as the morality police.

UN-Affiliated Workers Targeted

The detained individuals were employed by organizations operating under the United Nations umbrella in Afghanistan a country heavily dependent on international humanitarian aid following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.

The detentions raise immediate concerns about the safety and operational freedom of UN agency staff and NGO workers functioning on the ground in Afghanistan.

Pattern of Morality Enforcement Against Aid Workers

This incident is not an isolated case. The Taliban Detain have previously imposed their interpretation of Islamic law on foreign and domestic aid organization staff, including dress codes, gender segregation rules, and restrictions on female employees.

The targeting of UN-affiliated personnel over grooming standards marks a notable escalation in the application of morality laws to internationally protected humanitarian workers.

UN and International Response

Neither the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) nor any specific UN agency had issued a public statement confirming the detentions or the status of the affected employees at the time of publication.

The international community has repeatedly called on the Taliban Detain administration to respect the safety and neutrality of humanitarian workers operating under UN mandates inside Afghanistan.

Context: Taliban Rule and Personal Freedom

Since retaking Kabul in 2021, the Taliban Detain have systematically enforced strict social codes across Afghanistan, including banning girls from secondary and higher education, barring women from most forms of employment, and mandating religious dress and grooming standards for men.

The enforcement of beard length rules against employees of UN-affiliated bodies underscores the Taliban’s position that no individual or organization operating within Afghan territory is exempt from their moral and religious code.
