Washington: Former US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to feature his portrait on a $1 coin issued by the US Mint.

The move has sparked legal and constitutional debate, as American tradition and practice discourage placing the image of any living president on official currency.

The US Mint historically features past presidents, founding fathers, and notable figures but never a living president.

Experts note that while there is no absolute constitutional prohibition, such a decision would “break long-standing norms” and likely face legal and political challenges in Congress.

Analysts say the proposal appears aimed at strengthening Trump’s political branding ahead of the 2026 midterms,

but critics argue it could erode institutional traditions designed to preserve neutrality in national symbols.
