Washington/Doha U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order pledging to defend the Gulf nation of
Qatar against any external attack, in what analysts describe as an unprecedented security commitment.
The order declares that the United States will treat any armed assault on Qatar as an attack on America itself.
It authorizes Washington to take “all legal and necessary measures, including diplomatic, economic, and, if required, military action” to protect the sovereignty of Qatar and secure regional stability.
The agreement, which closely mirrors the collective defense clause of NATO, underscores a dramatic shift in Qatar’s standing in the region.
Only a few years ago, the Gulf state faced diplomatic and economic boycotts from neighboring countries.
Today, it has emerged as a key hub for Middle Eastern diplomacy and a critical U.S. ally.
Observers note the executive order could stir unease among other Gulf states, as Qatar enjoys an exclusive guarantee of American protection rarely extended outside formal alliance structures.
