Tokyo: Tragedy struck Japanese boxing as two fighters died within a day of each other from brain injuries sustained in separate bouts on the same card at Tokyoโs Korakuen Hall.
Shigetoshi Kotari passed away on Friday, while Hiromasa Urakawa died on Saturday, Japanese media reported.
Both 28-year-old fighters had undergone surgery for subdural haematoma, a condition involving bleeding inside the skull, after their August 2 matches.
The World Boxing Organization expressed its condolences, saying, โWe extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time.โ
Urakawa had lost to Yoji Saito via knockout before succumbing to his injuries.
In response to the incident, the Japanese Boxing Commission announced that all OPBF title fights will now be reduced from 12 rounds to 10.
