The United Kingdom, Canada, France and nine other countries have announced coordinated trade sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, declaring them illegal under international law and warning that continued expansion is destroying the prospect of a two-state solution.
The countries said they will introduce national measures or support European restrictions on trading goods with settlements, which they described as a “turning point” in efforts to protect Palestinian statehood. Israel closed the British consulate in Jerusalem in response.
Broadest Coordinated Action Yet
The joint statement was issued by the UK, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Together, the group represents the largest coordinated Western action against settlement trade to date.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced an import ban on goods produced in illegal settlements and a prohibition on advertising settlement land in the UK. He also accused settlers of carrying out “ethnic cleansing” in parts of the West Bank.
Two-State Solution Under Pressure
In the statement, the 12 foreign ministers said the Israeli government’s continued expansion of settlements “undermines any viable prospect of a two-state solution.”
They reaffirmed support for a negotiated peace in which Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist in peace, security, and within mutually recognized borders.
European Commission Vice-President Kallas echoed the position, saying all EU member states agree the settlements are illegal under international law and that the EU remains the largest provider of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the West Bank.
