US Has Legal Access to Greenland, No New Arctic Bases

Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic are taking place in Russian-controlled waters, far beyond the North Pole.

The United States already has full legal access to Greenland for security and defense purposes under a 1951 agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark.

Since 1992, when the U.S. military base in Kangerlussuaq was handed over to Greenland, Washington has not asked for new military bases or a larger military presence in the region.
