US federal prosecutors have indicted five Nebraska hotel operators all members of the same family in what the Department of Justice (DOJ) describes as a large-scale human trafficking and forced labour scheme involving undocumented workers, including at least ten children under the age of 12.
According to prosecutors, the accused coerced both children and adults into long hours of gruelling work under threat, in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, often within the very hotels they managed. Victims were allegedly paid little or nothing for their labour.
“This case is about a family business built on human exploitation,” said US Attorney Susan Lehr for the District of Nebraska. “The defendants allegedly profited by compelling vulnerable victims, including children, to work for little or no pay under threat and coercion.”
The accused Kentakumar Chaudhari, Rashmi Ajit Samani, Amit Prahladbhai Chaudhari, Amit Babubhai Chaudhari, and Maheshkumar Chaudhari face charges related to human trafficking, forced labour, and child exploitation.
