A tragic bear attack claimed the life of a man in his 20s on Mount Rausu in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, local police confirmed.

According to Japanese outlets, including Yomiuri Shimbun, the hiker attempted to resist the animal but was dragged into the forest. He was discovered the following day and transported to hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Officials from the nearby town of Shari reported that hunters later captured and shot a bear near the trail. Authorities will conduct DNA tests to determine whether it was the same bear involved in the fatal attack.
