Petro Pushes Back on US Visa Restriction Reports
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has publicly denied that he was ever officially informed of any restriction placed on his US visa or that he faced a possible arrest if he entered United States territory.
His statement directly contradicts reports suggesting the Trump administration had taken punitive diplomatic steps against him.
Planned Meeting With New York Mayor Blocked, Reports Claimed
The controversy centers on a reported plan for Petro to meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, which according to earlier reports was effectively blocked by the Trump administration through visa-related measures.
Petro, however, says he received no formal notification of any such restrictions from US authorities.
‘I Was Never Informed’ Petro’s Direct Denial
The Colombian president’s pushback was unambiguous. He stated clearly that neither a visa restriction nor the threat of arrest had ever been formally communicated to him through official diplomatic or legal channels.
The denial raises questions about whether the reported measures were applied informally or whether the original reports were inaccurate.
Trump Administration’s Stance Toward Petro
Relations between Bogotá and Washington have been strained under both the Petro government and the Trump administration.
Earlier in 2025, a brief but sharp diplomatic crisis erupted between the two countries over the deportation of Colombian migrants, during which the Trump administration threatened tariffs before a resolution was reached.
Petro has consistently positioned himself as a left-wing critic of US foreign policy in Latin America, adding a layer of ideological tension to the bilateral relationship.
Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Mamdani is the Mayor of New York City, a Democratic politician known for his progressive policy positions. A planned meeting between Mamdani and Petro would have carried symbolic weight given both leaders’ left-leaning political profiles.
No statement from Mamdani’s office or the New York City government confirming or denying the planned meeting has been publicly issued at the time of this report.
No Official Response From Washington
Neither the US State Department, the White House, nor US Customs and Border Protection has publicly confirmed or denied imposing visa restrictions on President Petro.
The absence of an official US response leaves the full picture of what occurred if anything formally unresolved.
