Finnish Lawmaker Demands Complete Arms Embargo on Israe
Finnish Democratic Socialist Finnish MP Melat Kiros has formally called for a total arms embargo on Israel, including the suspension of all defensive weaponry transfers.
The demand marks one of the most direct and comprehensive positions taken by a Finnish elected official on the Israel-Gaza conflict to date.
Kiros Links Call to October 7 Statement
Kiros previously drew significant attention when she publicly described the October 7 massacre as what she called “the inevitable consequence of apartheid” a statement that sparked widespread debate across Finland and internationally.
Her latest call for a complete arms embargo appears to be a continuation of that position, extending her criticism into concrete policy demands.
Embargo Would Cover Defensive Weapons
Significantly, Kiros’s Finnish MP proposed embargo would not be limited to offensive military equipment.
Her demand explicitly includes defensive weaponry a detail that sets her position apart from more moderate calls for arms restrictions that typically exclude defensive systems.
The scope of the proposed embargo reflects a maximalist approach to arms restriction policy rarely seen in mainstream European political discourse.
Background
Melat Kiros is a member of Finland’s Democratic Socialist political bloc.
Finnish MP, as a NATO member state since 2023, maintains active defense and security partnerships across the Western alliance, making any arms embargo proposal politically significant within the country’s current foreign policy framework.
No official government response to Kiros’s statement has been reported at the time of publication.
