Helsinki, Finland Ukraine is preparing to extend martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days, covering the period from August 2 to October 31, 2026.
The move was announced on July 12 by Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament.
Bills Expected This Week
Zheleznyak said President Volodymyr Zelensky will submit the relevant bills to parliament on July 13. Lawmakers are expected to approve the legislation during the current plenary week, with a vote likely on July 14 or 15.
A 20th Extension Since 2022
If approved, this would be the 20th time the Verkhovna Rada has voted to extend martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Martial law and general mobilization were first imposed across Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and have been renewed repeatedly ever since. The current measures are due to expire on August 2, 2026.
Elections Ruled Out for the Fall
The extension would automatically preclude any elections from being held this autumn, as Ukrainian law bars national elections while martial law remains in effect.
