Footage has emerged showing a Russian-made Be-200 amphibious aircraft taking off directly from a water surface, highlighting the firefighting jet’s specialized water-scooping capability.
Aircraft Capable of Rapid Water Intake
The Be-200, weighing approximately 40 tons, is a jet-powered amphibious aircraft designed primarily for aerial firefighting missions.
According to the footage, the aircraft can draw in 12,000 liters of water into its onboard tanks in just 14 seconds while taxiing across a water surface.
This rapid water-scooping ability allows the aircraft to refill without landing at an airport, significantly reducing turnaround time during firefighting operations.
Boat-Shaped Hull Enables Dual Takeoff Capability
The Be-200’s design features a boat-shaped hull, which enables it to take off and land on both land and water surfaces. This dual-surface capability distinguishes it from conventional firefighting aircraft that rely solely on runways.
The aircraft’s amphibious design makes it particularly suited for missions near lakes, rivers, or coastal areas where water sources are accessible but formal runway infrastructure may be limited.
