Imatra, Finland Arrests Two individuals were arrested Monday evening after crossing into Finland from Russia without authorization near the eastern border town of Imatra, the Southeast Finland Border Guard confirmed.
Unauthorized Crossing Near Imatra
The incident occurred in a rural section of Finland’s eastern border, where construction of the country’s border fence system is still ongoing. Authorities apprehended the pair shortly after they crossed.
Deputy Commander Antti Virta of the Southeast Finland Border Guard said the two are suspected of committing a state border offence under Finnish law.
Incomplete Fence Still Aided Capture
Virta noted that despite the fence not being fully operational in that area, it played a role in the swift apprehension of the individuals.
Although the fence system at that location remains under construction, Virta explained that it still enabled border guards to swiftly apprehend the two individuals near the border.
Finland Arrests has been constructing a series of border fences along its eastern frontier with Russia in recent years, part of broader efforts to reinforce border security.
Asylum Applications Filed
Following their arrest, both individuals have applied for asylum in Finland Arrests. Their nationalities and further biographical details have not been disclosed by authorities.

The Southeast Finland Border Guard confirmed the arrests in a news item, which also referenced involvement from national authorities, including National Police Commissioner Ilkka Koskimäki.
