Belarus opposition figure Statkevich refuses exile after release

One of the leading figures of the Belarusian opposition, Nikolai Statkevich, has refused to leave the country after his release from prison today.

He is currently at the Lithuanian–Belarusian border.

Statkevich, regarded by President Alexander Lukashenka as his personal enemy, spent the last five years in solitary confinement.

Earlier today, it became known that 52 political prisoners, including Statkevich, were freed and escorted to the border with Lithuania.
