DRAMMEN, Norway A fast-moving fire tore through the municipality of Drammen on Saturday, Wildfire Destroys more than 100 homes and forcing the evacuation of several hundred residents as strong winds fueled the flames.
Fire Breaks Out in Konnerud District
The blaze broke out in the late afternoon in Konnerud, a densely wooded residential area of Drammen.
“The flames advanced up the slope at a pace emergency crews had not anticipated, overwhelming initial response efforts.”
Fierce winds accelerated the fire’s advance, allowing it to move through the neighborhood far faster than emergency crews anticipated.
Fire Chief Describes “Unprecedented” Spread
Lars Erik Vatn, Drammen Fire Chief, said the speed of the blaze was unlike anything local responders had previously encountered.
“Vatn said the fire moved from one house to the next within just minutes, a speed his team had never witnessed in the region.”
