Helsinki/Ankara Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen has described the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara, Türkiye, as a success for both Finland and the security of the Alliance, following two days of high-level talks on 7–8 July.
Finland’s Fourth NATO Summit
The Ankara summit marked Finland’s fourth as a NATO member. According to Häkkänen, all of Finland’s objectives for the meeting moved in the right direction, the result of months and in some cases years of preparatory work.
12 New Defence Industry Agreements Signed
Among the summit’s tangible results, Finland put pen to paper on a dozen defence-industry agreements during the NSDIF26 forum, part of the broader Ankara gathering on 7 July.
Häkkänen said the deals will strengthen defence capability for both Finland and NATO as a whole, while also creating growth and employment opportunities for Finland’s defence sector.
France to Deploy Troops to Finnish Lapland
France will send troops to the Forward Land Forces (FLF) established in Finnish Lapland, under an agreement reached with the French Minister of Defence roughly a year ago. Preparations for the deployment had reportedly been under way behind the scenes ahead of the summit.
Continued Support for Ukraine
NATO members agreed on a robust two-year funding package for Ankara Ukraine, with additional support pledged from European, US, and Asian partners. Häkkänen also pointed to positive developments concerning Ukraine’s air defence capabilities, without providing further detail.
Naval Coalition and European Strike Capability
Finland is joining several European countries in building a naval coalition aimed at strengthening maritime defence a move Häkkänen framed as Europe’s response to US calls for greater burden-sharing in continental security.
Separately, Finland is working with partner nations to develop a stronger European long-range strike capability, which Häkkänen described as an important defence policy priority aimed at boosting Europe’s indigenous strike capacity.
European Defence Spending Accelerates
Häkkänen noted that European Ankara countries are rapidly strengthening their defence capabilities, a trend he said Finland has worked toward for several years, describing the goal as “a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO.”
Finland’s Standing Within NATO
The minister said Finland has strengthened its role within the Alliance through sustained diplomatic work, describing the country as “trusted and respected” and citing what he called historically rapid progress in advancing Finland’s defence objectives during negotiations.
Outlook
Häkkänen said NATO is Ankara “on the right track” but stressed that the work is far from finished.
He said Finland and other European countries face a major task in further strengthening their defence posture, citing the current threat environment as demanding swift action.
