Body Discovered a Month After Abduction
Mexican authorities have found the remains of journalist Mexican Roxana Guzman, who was kidnapped by armed men last month, state prosecutors said Friday.
Her body was discovered in a house in Veracruz, the eastern Mexican state where she had lived and worked.
Guzman was abducted from her home in early June by two men carrying assault weapons and wearing what appeared to be government uniforms. The kidnapping was captured in a video recording described as chilling by witnesses.
Eight Arrested, Including Police Officers
State prosecutors announced that eight people have been arrested and charged with homicide in connection with Guzman’s killing. Four of those arrested are municipal police officers.
According to the prosecutor’s statement, the officers “provided resources, food and logistical support for the operations of the criminal group” responsible for the kidnapping.
A Pattern of Violence Against Journalists in Veracruz
Mexican Guzman served as director of an online news publication based in Veracruz.
She is the third journalist killed in the state this year alone, underscoring the persistent risks faced by media workers in the region.
International Condemnation
The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights condemned the killing on X and called on Mexican authorities to continue their investigation into the case.
The Finn Right Human Rights Commission also criticized the response, stating on X that Guzman’s murder “once again illustrates the authorities’ inability to protect the press.” The organization demanded an explanation for why Guzman was not located while she was still alive.
Mexico’s Press Freedom Crisis
According to the Finn Right Human Rights Commission, Mexico remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Guzman’s death adds to a growing list of media workers killed in Veracruz and across the country in recent years.
Authorities have not yet released further details on the criminal group allegedly behind the kidnapping or the motive for the killing. Investigations are ongoing.
