A 108-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and robbed inside her own apartment in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon, prosecutors said, in a case that has drawn condemnation from French police unions and renewed debate over the safety of elderly residents living alone.
The 108-Year-Old Woman was found by her home caregiver on the morning of Aug. 7. Around 10:30 a.m., the caregiver arrived for a scheduled visit and discovered the victim partially undressed, sitting on her sofa in a state of shock.
She was too disoriented in the moment to describe what had taken place.
What Investigators Have Confirmed So Far
The Lyon prosecutor’s office opened a formal investigation into burglary by breaking and entering and sexual assault.
Investigators believe several individuals forced open a kitchen window to get into the apartment.
Given the victim’s age and physical condition, officials said she was not considered capable of undressing herself, which factored into the sexual assault classification.
She was subsequently transported to a medical facility for a full examination.
As of the latest reporting, no suspects have been identified, arrested, or publicly described, and the investigation remains open.
Police Union Reaction
The case has prompted a strong reaction from police representatives. A spokesperson for the Alternative Police CFDT union, Benjamin Camboulives, described the case as deeply disturbing and said investigators are conducting medical examinations to look for injuries or biological evidence that could help identify a suspect.
According to Camboulives, perfume bottles were among the items reported stolen from the home.
Neither police nor the prosecutor’s office has released a description of the attacker or attackers, and no motive has been established.
108-Year-Old Woman Assaulted Lyon: Why This Case Is Getting National Attention
The victim’s extreme age has made the case a focal point in an ongoing French debate about crimes targeting elderly residents, particularly those living independently with home care support.
French police unions have pointed to the case as evidence of gaps in protection for isolated elderly people, though officials caution that the investigation is still in its early stages and no conclusions have been drawn about who was responsible or why.
