Diplomatic ties between the United States and India have hit a new low after the U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods — the highest tariff rate currently applied by the U.S. on any major economy.

The move includes a new 25 percent tariff specifically targeting India’s continued import of Russian oil, bringing the total to 50 percent. Experts say the sudden escalation came as a surprise, especially since India had been one of the earliest countries to enter trade talks with Washington.

Despite frequent public expressions of friendship between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the decision puts India in a tight spot. Now, only Brazil faces similarly high tariffs.
