Latvia has decided to close its airspace along the borders with Belarus and Russia for security reasons.

The announcement was made by Defense Minister Andris Spruds, as reported by Latvia’s public broadcaster LSM.

The restriction means all flights over the border region will be suspended for at least a week.

Authorities say the step is part of stronger security measures to protect Latvia’s sovereignty during a period of heightened regional tensions.
