A 51-year-old woman from Belgorod, Oksana Zubaryova, was reportedly running a large-scale international drug operation from Russia.

Together with an accomplice from Spain, she chartered the vessel Eser under the Panamanian flag to transport 9 tons of cocaine across the Atlantic. The shipment was loaded in Venezuela, and the plan was for the ship to travel to Morocco.

However, the operation collapsed when one of the crew members died during the voyage, forcing the captain to dock in Cape Verde. Police searched the ship and recovered the entire cocaine shipment.

A Cape Verde court has already sentenced 11 Russian sailors involved to 10–12 years in prison. Oksana Zubaryova will face trial in Belgorod, Russia.
