Iranian Shield May Extend to Southern Lebanon

Ibrahim Al Moussawi, a Hezbollah member of the Lebanese parliament, stated on Saturday that it is “highly likely” Iran will formally declare all of southern Lebanon under its protection in the near term.

Under such a declaration, any fresh Israeli military strike on the region would be treated as grounds for a direct Iranian military response against Israel.

Al Moussawi noted that Iran has already extended this protective status to Beirut, framing the potential expansion southward as a natural progression of Tehran’s existing posture in Lebanon.

Al Moussawi Rejects “Leverage” Framing

The Hezbollah MP offered a pointed rebuttal to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who had suggested that Iran was using Lebanon as a geopolitical bargaining chip in its broader confrontation with the United States.

“Iran is helping Lebanon. Lebanon is not in a place to help Iran anymore.”Ibrahim Al Moussawi, Hezbollah MP, Lebanese Parliament

Al Moussawi’s remarks draw a clear line between Hezbollah’s view of the Iran-Southern Lebanon relationship one of Iranian patronage rather than mutual strategic exploitation and the framing advanced by Lebanon’s head of state.

Context: Escalating Regional Tensions

The statement comes amid an ongoing and volatile period in the Middle East, with Israeli-Lebanese tensions remaining high following previous rounds of cross-border hostilities.

Iran’s declared protection over Beirut and the prospect of its extension to southern Lebanon represents a significant escalation in Tehran’s publicly stated commitment to the territory.

President Aoun’s government has sought to assert Southern Lebanon sovereignty and distance Beirut from being drawn further into the Iran-U.S. geopolitical rivalry.

Al Moussawi’s remarks signal that Hezbollah fundamentally rejects that framing and views Iranian involvement as protective rather than instrumentalizing.
