Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying such an encounter could take place this year as part of efforts to restart stalled nuclear talks.

The remarks came during his meeting at the White House with South Koreaโ€™s new President Lee Jae-myung, who encouraged Trump to pursue dialogue with Pyongyang.

โ€œI would like to have a meeting. I look forward to sitting down with Kim Jong Un at an appropriate time,โ€ Trump said, signaling a possible revival of diplomacy that collapsed during his previous term.

In a surprising addition, Trump also suggested that Washington might seek control of the land in South Korea where U.S. military forces are stationedโ€”an idea likely to stir debate in Seoul.
